Kauri Cliffs

“The World’s Top Twenty Golf Destinations”

Kauri Cliffs, the most sublime of New Zealand’s emerald masterpieces, is worth a journey to the ends of the earth. Four hours by car from Auckland in the remote reaches of the North Island, the rumpled terrain of Kauri Cliffs folds up and down as if pinched by God’s fingers. With six cliff-hugging holes and fifteen featuring views of the Pacific, designer David Harman’s perfectly tended layout draws favourable comparisons to Pebble Beach. Here, however, the inland holes are wonders in themselves, not just preludes to the ocean holes. At the stunning practice facility, where the Bay of Islands serves as a backdrop, even a duck hook can be a pleasant sight.

American financier and developer Julian Robertson has taken great pains to ensure that the luxurious Kauri Cliffs Lodge is every bit the equal of the golf course. The Lodge recalls a pioneer sheep rancher’s homestead by marrying British sophistication with frontier toughness. Suites are spacious, with sitting areas, open fireplaces, and well-appointed bathrooms. From one’s private porch, the views looking past the course to the Pacific Ocean are heavenly!
