Kauri Cliffs
Kauri Cliffs - New Zealand

A dream. Fly from Auckland - where this February you'll see magnificent yachts battling for the America's Cup in the Hauraki Gulf - then up the coast over hammerhead sharks basking off white-sand beaches, over the lyrical Bay of Islands to Kauri Cliffs, a billionaire's fantasy come true. It is owned by Julian Robertson, founder of Tiger Management, which, at its zenith, was the world's largest hedge fund. Glamorous East Coast Americans, he and his wife Josie fell in love with New Zealand - the peace, the eco-friendly way of life, the geographical gamut of alps, glaciers, tropical forests, volcanoes, hot springs and translucent sea. At Kauri there is a pink-shell beach two metres deep. By road the instructions read: "Go to the end of the world, and its two stops after that." Robertson has built a championship golf course to rival Pebble Beach; each hole overlooks the ocean. Suites are immaculately designed and fabulously comfortable. Fireplaces light at the touch of a button; double doors open onto the deck with views of the sea; chairs are linen and squashy with ace reading lights. It's the best contemporary country-house chic: huge vases of daisies, home-made jams, food that is light and fresh and lavish all at the same time. And there's choice at dinner, not a given at other luxury NZ lodges. Bed-making is astonishing. By the time you've eaten the lemon, lime and echinacea yoghurt at breakfast, your room will be a poem.
