The weekend begins on Thursday night in Auckland where the Auckland Art Gallery welcomes attendees with drinks, a private curator talk, and tour of this architecturally award-winning building and its ever-growing collection. Works from the New Zealand and international collections as well as special exhibitions will be part of this private viewing. Overnight accommodation is included at Sofitel Auckland.
Depart after breakfast to arrive at the renowned Gibbs Farm by mid-morning. This privately owned sculpture park is only rarely open to the public, so with the generosity of the owner this is a truly special opportunity to spend the day among some of the best examples of works by Anish Kapoor, Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Serra, Daniel Buren, Chris Booth and more. The scope, ambition and artistic quality of the Gibbs Farm rivals major collections and sculpture parks around the world. Guests will enjoy a picnic lunch at the farm.
The coach will arrive at The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs for a late afternoon check-in, followed by pre-dinner drinks and dinner at your leisure.
The Art Weekend events continue with a lovely lodge breakfast, with inspired talks by impressive art world scholars.
A breakfast talk will be presented by special guest Mr. Chris Saines, CNZM. Chris is the Director of the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane, and the former Director of the Auckland Art Gallery. Chris is passionate, learned and a firm supporter of art in the Asia Pacific region. “The contemporary art of Asia Pacific has become the ‘new black’ of the global art world. What might that mean for Australia and New Zealand here and now?”, says Chris.

The afternoon art fest continues with a session led by authority Ms. Zara Stanhope, PhD., Principal Curator and Head of Programmes at Auckland Art Gallery. Zara will share her thoughts around the theme “Art Matters - discussing New Zealand art with a regional/world context”.
Chris and Zara are engaging speakers, with their fingers firmly on the pulse of the contemporary art scene in New Zealand, Australia and the Asia Pacific. Expect to be enthralled by their takes on what’s important, what’s happening now and what you need to know in today’s fast moving art world.
The weekend will also include time to simply relax and enjoy all the lodge Kauri Cliffs has to offer.
