On Property Activities

Opportunities abound for outdoor pursuits within the picturesque Kauri Cliffs property. The lodge team are eager to suggest and organise all manner of activities- from hikes to the waterfall, to a game of tennis, to picnics on Pink Beach, the Kauri Cliffs property offers countless activities.Guided bird watching, fishing, surfing, farm tours, and much more await lodge guests...

You can be treated to a special tour of our working farm with our farm manager, as your guide. He will take you around our stunning 6,000 acres of farmland and share his extensive knowledge on the different farm animals which are farmed here.
Pink Beach is composed of minute pink shells and surrounded by magnificent Pohutukawa trees. This beach is perfect for shelling and picnicking.
Little Takou enjoys spectacular surf. The wide sandy beach is cut out of a steep, green hillside and the overall effect is dazzling. Adjacent is the beautiful and longer Big Takou.
Waiaua Beach is our widest beach and is covered with fine, white sand. The beach is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing. There are tiny offshore islands close enough to explore.
Surf some of New Zealand’s most beautiful untouched scenery including Kauri Cliffs. It is as though nature designed the Northland coastline with surfers in mind. Tiny coves, long sandy beaches, river mouths, point breaks, sandbars and reefs.....all within a short drive across different surf beaches. Enjoy a two hour beginner’s lesson at Kauri Cliffs or an all-day Surfari of Northland beaches.
Combine one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with fresh grilled seafood or lamb, and local produce partnered with fine New Zealand cheese and wines. Your barbeque will include your own Kauri Cliffs chef. Transport to and from the beach will be provided. For those who opt to walk, the trek is 35 minutes via the golf course and trail near the 7th tee. Walking shoes or sneakers are advised. 24 hours notice is required..
Our three private beaches and the waterfall provide a beautiful and picturesque setting for a picnic. Walk or be driven from the Lodge. If you wish, you can drive part of the way to the beach and then continue with a brisk walk.
Fishing is a religion around these parts. Our local guide will take you to one of the beaches on the property. You may well hook snapper or kahawai (similar to a blue fish). Bring your catch back to the lodge and our chef will prepare it for your dinner. This is fresh fish at its best! A big part of this fishing experience is taking in the serenity and beauty of these spectacular surroundings. Please advise us if you would like some refreshments to take with you. (A cold beer has been known to encourage the fish to bite!) Please note this is a tidal activity so the times change daily.
Northland is home to many of New Zealand’s native birds. Seasonally, the region also plays host to several international avian visitors. Our expert guides will take you on a guided tour around the property to view our unique bird life.
We have some beautiful walks on our 6000-acre property ranging from a 10-minute bush walk, which takes in the magnificent Kauri Tree (700-900 years old) to a two-hour walk that includes a visit to the waterfall, Waiaua Bay or Little Takou Beach. These are some magical spots to visit. The kitchen can provide you with a snack pack of light refreshments and other essentials if you like.

Possums and rabbits are a major pest in New Zealand and threaten native birds and flora. We invite you to join us in the eradication of pests while exploring the property by night. Departure time is just after dark. A 4WD vehicle will transport you to the hunting zone, where you will be provided with a gun and taken on a guided hunt. When the terrain permits, a vehicular mule or quad bike will be the mode of transport.
We are pleased to offer equestrian adventure for all levels of riding ability. Ride with Kate Hewlett who has completed and placed in events such as the Burghley and Badminton Horse Trials and who was part of the New Zealand Olympic Team in 2004.

Explore Kauri Station and its surrounds on magnificent gentle horses, picking your way through native forest and our working farm to the beach, where you can ride on the sand and then enjoy a picnic lunch. Alternately you can join Kate on her farm in Kerikeri where you can ride in the sand arena, explore the cross-country course or trek over the easy rolling farm with tracks, forested areas and wide open spaces to ride through.

You will be matched with a suitable horse or pony depending on your size and ability.

All equipment will be supplied and we ask you to wear comfortable riding clothes and boots suitable for all weather conditions.
Men’s, ladies’ and children’s mountain bikes are available for guest use. Please enquire at reception. (Bicycles are not permitted on the golf course pathways).
Our swimming pool is located between the lodge and first guest suite. The pool and hot tub are open from 7 am to 9 pm daily.
