The Sanctuary
The Cape Sanctuary is the largest privately owned and funded wildlife restoration project of its kind in New Zealand.
Now 15 years in the making and with a predator-proof fence that stretches 10.6km from coast to coast, The Cape Sanctuary vision is to restore the communities of land birds, seabirds, reptiles and invertebrates that once thrived on the peninsula.
Key to these efforts are the relocation and protection of juvenile kiwi bird, the development of one of the only mainland Tuatara breeding programmes in New Zealand, the preservation of the gannet colonies and preservation of precious flora and fauna that would otherwise be at risk from predators.
Guests at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers have the unique opportunity to partake in sanctuary-based experiences, including Night Tours, Forest Bird Feeding and Guided Sanctuary Experiences, where they can see this endangered wildlife in its natural habitat.
These exclusive experiences are carefully managed with limited availability to ensure they have a low impact on the wildlife and environment. They also support The Cape Sanctuary’s conservation efforts through funding and awareness.
